Ice and snow

Now the winter is over us for real. It's cold and snow and ice are covering the roads and pavements. Darkness reigns all but a few hours of the day.

Still, there is joy. Christmas dinner and gifts, friends and family. Everybody wants to welcome our little son, now 2,5 months old.

And my running continues. Every second day the last few weeks, today only 4 kilometres (4:12 min/km average) but more often up to 8-10 km, in 4:30-4:45 min/km pace.

Soon time for a new year. One more year to go, before school is out. For good this time.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

It's pouring down. No, not down, more like horisontally. It's pouring, horisontally. Had a new umbrella, unfolded it for the first time today. It lasted not even half an hour in the west coast weather; had to dump it in a trash can.

Saw a movie today, pretty good one actually. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, from 1962. About some rebellish guy, sent of to youth prison, who happens to have quite a talent for running.

I haven't been running for the whole weekend, and today I donated some blood so I'm on a strict non-running scheme until tomorrow. I'd better find the time for hitting the tracks then, though, otherwise I'll get crazy. All work and no running makes Jack a dull boy.

See you later, off for now.

Morning run

Had a shitty night. The son wouldn't sleep, so neither couldn't we. Anyhow, went up for a morning run at six. What a morning! Ten degrees, relatively mild. It's been like that for a few days now, after a week of zero degrees. So the weather in Gothenburg is quite nice right now, even though it rains a little now and then.

Then I took a shower and went to school. Half a day of epidemiology, and then a few hours on public health. Now I'm back home, celebrating 10 years with my gf in front of the tv. Tomorrow we'll go out and have some dinner together, while her parents take care of their grandson.

Water over the bridge

Long time ago and so on. Lots of water under the bridge, and - since it's raining - lots and lots of water above it too.

So what's happened since last time? Over a year has passed and I'm beginning to see the end of med school. I'm soon finishing a language course in Spanish and I got married in June. Oh, and I got a son a month ago.

So now I'm a dad, with all the responsibilities that's comes in the package. And with all the joy and proud, too. Ah, and without all the sleep. Apparently babies (although I think they prefer "little people") like to eat. A lot. Our little guy wakes up at least every three hours to get some milk. Maybe I would do the same if my food came in as nice wrapping, but still. Every three hours, even at night? That much eating can't be good for you.

Anyway. Besides being a dad, studying, running and programming, I don't do much nowadays. Haven't been to a punk rock gig since last year. Haven't had a real beer for a few months. Quite depressing, isn't it? Still I'm happy, I have a beautiful wife and a lovely boy. Wouldn't hurt to go to Spatt again, though. I'll be sure to mention it here, if I get there.

All new seasons for Prison Break and Terminator

Finally the new seasons are started for Prison Break and Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles. They are two great shows. But some things are bugging me.

This fourth Prison Break season will probably be better than the third, by the looks of the first three episodes. And hopefully it will be the last season too. I don't want the producers to go Lost on me. Lost started out as a promising show in season one, and held the suspension high long into season two. But then it fell, hard. I still watch it, but I find myself crossing my fingers after every damn episode hoping it will be one of the last. I'm not there yet with Prison Break, but I might be when the season ending comes closer.

I haven't decided yet what to think of the new Terminator season. The first season was a real hit, and of course the second season has potential. Still, I have only seen one episode of season two, and it might be a little to early to decide if it's a flip or a flop. But there is negative news. The writers have thrown in a melt-robot into the story. The melt-robot is the one thing that was bad in the Terminator trilogy. It's not a good sign to see one in the show too.

Hundred Pushups

I started running half a year ago, and I have kept it going in good pace since. Now it's time for a new challenge. I stumbled upon hundredpushups.com, a site with a training program that promises to take you to hundred pushups in six weeks. Of course I had to try, and I'm now two weeks in and feeling stronger by the minute. I'll probably post an update in four weeks; let's just hope I won't accidentally crush the keyboard under my fingers while writing.

Yesterday I didn't write a note

A few days ago we went to another part of Gothenburg, to check out a new apartment. We're looking for something bigger and closer to the central parts of town. Unfortunately the tenant wasn't home, he's away on a boat for a few weeks, so we couldn't see the interior of the apartment, but we want up there anyway, took a walk in the neighborhood to figure out where the nearest bus stop were and where to buy groceries, and just getting a feeling from the place.

It's a quite nice part of town, I think. Or so I hope. It's close to a big park, a few running tracks, and the hospital is in biking distance.

On a similar topic, at least it's about apartments (and neighbors). There's a new couple living in the apartment above ours. They must have moved in yesterday, I think, but we haven't met them yet. Yesterday night when I went to bed someone was hammering, like they we're building something. Must have been something big, because they hammered on for ten or fifteen minutes, with a few pauses. I knocked on the ceiling to signal to them to stop, but all I got was an aching hand. I also formulated a few notes in my head, to put in their mail box the next day, like "stop the f*ckin hammering late at night, some of us are trying to sleep" and so on. But I couldn't really find the touch, and also, delivering a note tomorrow wouldn't help me at all tonight.

After about twenty minutes I decided to do something about it, and put on flipflops and a robe and went out in the stairwell. Walked up and knocked on the door and rang the doorbell. A young woman opened, and I asked her, "is it you who's hammering?!" "Yes, I'm sorry, we just moved in, and are fixing the last things now". "Well fix them tomorrow, it's late and I need to sleep now. And mind the hour the next time".

I'm proud of not being so damn swedish and shy, and instead walking up the stairs and tell them to stop. What I'm even more proud of is my friendlyness; when turning around to go back down to my place I said to the woman in the door, a friendly "Welcome to the house by the way!" And I actually said it without even a hint of sarcasm or irony.

Even when angry I could be quite nice.
