It's raining

It's raining again. It has been pouring down for a few days now. Wait, did I write "down"? As my neighbour put it: "It never rains straight down in Gothenburg." Instead, the rain comes from the side, with a little help from the constantly blowing wind.

One consequence of the non-straight raining is that you start bumping into people. You are moving against the rain, so you hold your umbrella up in front of you, which means you won't see where you are going. Or you are moving with the rain in your back, and you're busy trying to hold the umbrella up in the right direction, and the people you meet have their sight shaded by their umbrellas, and "bang". Running into cold, wet strangers seems to be what you do around here to get contact.

The only good thing about the rain is that the snow is gone now. It tried to resist the water masses the first day, but eventually had to give in and melt away. Instead, there is big puddles of water everywhere you look, and don't try to walk on anything else than paved roads - you will ruin your shoes if you step on the water-sick grass areas.

Exit Iris

I just discovered the "Add Image" button here, so I'd better use it. Here are a few pictures from Exit Iris' gig at SPATT/Underjorden yesterday. The pictures are taken with my cell, and the beer was cheap, so the quality is pretty much what you would expect.

It was the first time I saw Exit Iris, but I had downloaded the songs from their web site and liked it. The gig wasn't very great, musically, but the band had an energy that they did a good job communicating to the audience. I don't think the sound system made Exit Iris justice; as usual on small clubs the sound output wasn't much more than a big inferno. Still, the club was nice and the beer were cheap so the night was definitely worth the fee.

Two other bands, Vicious Irene and Dyke Alert, played at the same gig as Exit Iris, but I was busy hanging in the bar eating hot sandwiches so I didn't get any photos of them.

Wired for a few days

A few days ago I upgraded the kernel on my Powerbook, running "Dapper Drake", the experimental Ubuntu release. After rebooting, the wireless network card was down. Apparently the bcm43xx module wasn't included with the kernel, so I had to revert to the old kernel to be able to surf wirelessly, or plug in the old Ethernet cable again.

Today a new kernel package (version 2.6.15-17.26) was released for dapper, with the bcm43xx module included. It's always interesting to use an experimental version of some software. You never know what will happen after the next upgrade.

So a comment on the weather. We have about minus 14 degrees Celsius here. It's barely possible to go out when the sun shines, and it gets impossible if the sun is down or behind a cloud, or the wind blows. The old stone age guys who decided to build camp up here, what was their problem? Why didn't they choose a nicer place, with a decent climate? Thanks a lot, ancestors.
